the connectome is not an actual simulated brain, there's a lot missing, but it is still a step towards stuff that might be as aware as an animal. and inputting digital pain is.. well.

I think part of it is sensory. Supposedly beavers build damns because they just instinctively hate the sound of running water. Maybe birds take dirtbaths because they're wired to enjoy the sensation
