Apparently Tempest Rising is rated highly and from 2025. You may be into that for a new RTS (I haven't played it yet though)

Also, yea, I tried AoE4. I couldn't really get into it that much. From my own experience, SC2 (the PvE portion anyways) is probably the simplest RTS I've played

Tempest Rising was made by some old SC2 staff. It didn't quite live up to the promise of. being the next big thing after Starcraft/
